BMW has thrilled car enthusiasts and gaming fans alike by recreating the legendary BMW M3 GTR from Need for Speed: Most Wanted as part of the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebrations. This remarkable tribute bridges the gap between motorsport history and gaming nostalgia.

A Nod to a Legendary Game
Launched in 2005, Need for Speed: Most Wanted became a cultural phenomenon, known for its high-speed chases and open-world racing gameplay. The M3 GTR was the poster car, earning a place in the hearts of fans worldwide. Now, BMW has transformed an actual race car into the game’s iconic design.

The Racing Heritage of the M3 GTR
The BMW M3 GTR is rooted in motorsport glory. Built for the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in 2001, the original car swapped its in-line-six S54 engine for a P60B40 V8, giving it the competitive edge it needed. Driven by Jörg Müller and JJ Lehto, the car helped BMW Motorsport clinch the constructors’ championship, with Müller taking the drivers’ title.

The version used for this recreation is the #42 M3 GTR, the same car that dominated the 2001 ALMS GT category. This piece of racing history has been vinyl-wrapped to match the Need for Speed design, bringing the game’s art to life.

Where to See It
Fans can see the recreated BMW M3 GTR in person at BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, until January 2025. This exhibit gives visitors a chance to connect with a piece of gaming and automotive history.
