Path of Exile 2 Smashes Records: Becomes 15th Most-Played Game on Steam

Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile 2 has taken the gaming world by storm, launching to massive success across Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. With a peak concurrent player count of 578,569 on Steam, the action role-playing sequel has become the 15th most-played game of all time on Valve’s platform, surpassing hits like Valheim and Terraria.

A Rocky Yet Record-Breaking Start

Released on December 6, 2024, Path of Exile 2 initially struggled with server issues, as anticipated by developer Grinding Gear Games (GGG). These issues were attributed to the overwhelming influx of players at launch. However, GGG acted swiftly, stabilizing servers over the weekend and allowing the game to achieve unprecedented player engagement.

In addition to its record-breaking numbers on Steam, Path of Exile 2 has become the platform’s top-selling game by revenue, outperforming major titles like Marvel Rivals. While console player numbers remain undisclosed, GGG hinted that total concurrent players might have approached one million, further cementing the game’s milestone debut.

Critical Acclaim and Positive Reception

The player response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the game holding a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. Of the 26,800 reviews, 82% praise the game for its redefined action and fleshed-out endgame. IGN awarded Path of Exile 2 an 8/10, describing the game as an exciting evolution of the franchise, even during its Early Access phase.

Key Features Driving Success

Set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast, Path of Exile 2 introduces:

  • Six Character Classes, each with two Ascendancy Classes, offering deep customization.
  • Co-op Mode for up to six players, alongside a solo experience.
  • A robust endgame system, catering to both casual and hardcore players.

What’s Next for Path of Exile 2?

With its successful launch, Path of Exile 2 is poised to further expand its player base. GGG is likely to focus on refining the game’s performance and introducing new content to sustain the momentum. As the game progresses through Early Access, its potential to rival other blockbuster RPGs looks promising.
