Louisiana-based film production company Stellarblade LLC has filed a lawsuit against Sony and game developer Shift Up, alleging trademark infringement over the name of the PlayStation 5 game Stellar Blade. As reported by IGN, the lawsuit, filed in a Louisiana court, claims that the game’s use of the name is damaging the business of Stellarblade LLC, which was established in 2010 to provide multimedia entertainment services such as film, documentary, and music video production.
Griffith Chambers Mehaffey, the owner of Stellarblade LLC, has held the domain stellarblade.com since 2006. He argues that since the game’s rebranding from Project Eve to Stellar Blade in 2021, customers have had difficulty finding his business online due to the game’s dominance in search results.

Mehaffey’s lawyer stated that Sony and Shift Up’s superior resources have pushed Stellarblade LLC into “digital obscurity,” threatening the company’s livelihood. Mehaffey also claims that the game’s trademark, filed in January 2023, is “confusingly similar” to his own, which was filed in June 2023.

The lawsuit seeks damages, attorney fees, and an injunction to prevent Sony and Shift Up from using the name Stellar Blade or any similar variation in the future. It also requests that all materials related to the game be destroyed if the case is successful.
