Ubisoft Disbands Team Behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Amid Commercial Underperformance

Ubisoft Montpellier, the team responsible for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, has reportedly been disbanded after the game’s underwhelming sales and failed pitches for a sequel and expansions. This decision suggests the title didn’t meet Ubisoft’s commercial expectations.

Commercial Struggles for The Lost Crown

The game, released in January 2024, sold only 300,000 units in its first two weeks, a figure significantly below Ubisoft’s projected sales targets, as reported by Insider Gaming. Despite its historical significance, the team behind The Lost Crown was unable to convince Ubisoft’s higher-ups to greenlight further content. Proposals for a sequel and two post-launch expansions were also declined.

Long-Term Sales Strategy

Sources close to the situation, including French journalist Gautoz, revealed that Ubisoft’s decision to halt future support came early in 2024, while the first expansion, Mask of Darkness, was still under development. Ubisoft’s rationale included concerns that a sequel could cannibalize The Lost Crown‘s long-term sales. This strategy is not new for Ubisoft, as they previously employed similar tactics with Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, which saw a resurgence in sales post-launch.

Impact on Ubisoft Montpellier

Ubisoft Montpellier, one of Ubisoft’s oldest studios, has a headcount of approximately 400 employees. The team working on The Lost Crown has reportedly been dispersed to focus on other, more commercially viable projects within the company. This decision underscores the impact of the game’s disappointing performance and highlights Ubisoft’s evolving strategy to prioritize projects with stronger sales potential.
