Historical, Cozy, and Strategical: A Moonlit Oath Review

In a gaming landscape filled with monotonous storylines, bland characters, and linear progression, it’s no wonder that games are picked up and let go of so quickly. You’ve picked up mobile games where choice is an illusion, but what if I told you that there’s an upcoming game where every decision matters and the story rarely ever stays the same?

Enter The Moonlit Oath, a story-driven fantasy RPG where your choices shape the very foundation of the world you’re living in. In this beautifully crafted world inspired by Chinese history and culture, prepare for a storytelling experience gracefully intertwined within different gaming mediums, from narrative-heavy visual novel gameplay, all the way to a strategic and downright competitive experience through its battle system.

That time, I got reincarnated as a noble

The Moonlight Oath starts off as you would in any self-insert journey, with you becoming the male or female head of the Hua family. Normally, this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary in most games, but remember, each decision impacts the game and how it progresses.

Shortly following your self insert selection, the main story finally unfolds. Your brother had gone missing leaving you as the remaining heir to the Hua Family. As the Hua Family heir, you receive the Hua Edict Chronicles, a family heirloom which lets you rule the world. As a newer noble thrust into high society, education is key with you being sent to the Mingyong Academy to learn more about literature and martial arts. Not everything is as it seems though with the academy focusing on scholarly etiquette and not court etiquette.

Point and click and more

With the world of The Moonlit Oath opened up, the Mingyong Academy is yours to explore, with destinations like the Training Ground, Tinglan, and Zhijie Dormitory, as well as the Taoli Study being accessible. While various plot points happen throughout these destinations, the cozy aspects happen in your own dormitory.

The Tinglan or Zhijie dormitory is where you’d stay throughout the events of the game, with it also acting as a central hub. Exploring felt like a breeze being reminiscent of a point and click adventure turned up to 11, with functionality found in every corner. Personally, seeing the cat in your dorm has a little toggle was heartwarming because who wouldn’t want to pet the animals?

Taking in the views

The more you get absorbed into the world of The Moonlit Oath, the more you get to meet its denizens, and the more you stare into their eyes, the more you’d want to get lost in them and even get lost with them.

Whichever your preferences, there’s a friend by your side that you’d love to spend your day with. Personally, after saving Ji Yuanqi, what started as an annoyance felt more like genuine concern and, through that concern, admiration. A genuine golden retriever in a somewhat discerning world, I know that with him by my side, everything would turn out well.

The art of war meets the heart of romance

Normally, narrative-heavy games like The Moonlit Oath would have some semblance of a strategy game or mini games to pass the time, but remember, the academy focused on martial arts? This confused me because why would you put a noble through martial arts training, then it makes sense, it’s the art of war and leading an army.

In this unassuming RPG lies a full-on turn-based strategy game, complete with anime cutscenes, mind you, and with this, I knew that even if there would be dull moments, the stimulation from wanting to go further into this world would make me want to win.

Closing thoughts

The path to victory in love lies not in conquest, but in surrender. In surrendering myself to the beautifully crafted world of The Moonlit Oath, I know that my decisions will always be worth it.

I see myself wavering as I go through The Moonlit Oath, as progression may be slow at times, but there’s just something about the narrative and emotions that it conveys that makes you want to keep pushing forward. Good things come to those who wait, and as I go deeper and deeper into The Moonlit Oath and close my eyes only to be washed away by its melodic soundtrack, I feel at peace.
