When somebody tells you that they’re a gamer and they only play one game, is it something you’d mock or respect? To be honest, following the rise of gacha games and even RPGs like Genshin Impact and even beforehand with MOBA games like DOTA or LOL, it’s becoming quite common for there to be one game gamers and there’s nothing wrong with that.

To play a video game is an experience to immerse yourself in a world free from the shackles of reality but when you can literally put yourself in your character’s shoes, that just amps it up to 11.

Where Winds Meet is an epic Wuxia open-world action-adventure RPG that had been released in China originally for PC last December 2024 but set for a global release on November 14, 2025 on PC and PS5. What I initially thought prior to playing would be another gacha game slopfest was something else entirely.

Everybody was kung fu fighting

For the uninitiated, Wuxia is a Chinese genre of fiction and film about martial artists in ancient China, literally translating to “martial arts and chivalry”. Add magic into the mix and it’s a different genre entirely but make it purely martial arts with China as its main setting and you’d arrive at the genre.

Starting off the game, you’re brought into a full on battle as Jiang Yan, the man carrying the child greeting you as you log in. This is the first of what made me change my opinion about the game which was its combat. It’s not a button spammy mess similar to what you’d expect like with Genshin Impact but a full on Sekiro-esque or more recently Wukong-esque battle with dodging, blocking, skills and executions.

As you progress further into the game heading past the tutorials, more weapon styles become available and not just that but even skills that let you traverse through the world. The combat inspiration of Where Winds Meet has its core in the practical applications of martial arts while keeping the fantastic visuals that come from its entertainment and if you can imagine flying in the air like Goku, you could  make it happen.

Put yourself in their shoes

I wasn’t kidding when I mentioned you specifically in the previous section but I mean it literally. For lack of a better term, the character customization in this game is so detailed that I could literally put myself in the game as a martial artist and I could live my fantasy vicariously through my in-game character.

Wanna put your voice in and hear grunts or even put your face in? You could do that while setting up your initial character. There was even an option to choose to either have a prettier aesthetic or a cool aesthetic and the costumes you could unlock as you progress through the game was a good motivator too.

Cats out of the bag

Speaking of motivators, while the game’s plot is genuinely interesting, oftentimes there would be gamers such as myself that would rather just drift around the world aimlessly. The cat’s out of the bag (and there are A LOT of cats that you could pet in this game), and you could just veer off course and go on an adventure all on your own.

See those platforms there by the waterfall? That’s probably a puzzle.

See that chest atop the waterfall? Why not open it and keep the treasure inside?

See the Shadow Puppeteer off in the overworld? He sees you too and he’ll see that you won’t see anything again.

Slice of life and then some

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel that is the Where Winds Meet journey and that’s the realization that the world it presents is so vast that you could wander aimlessly and still have so much to explore. I went off on my own due to my curiosity and I was awarded with an adventure that had roots in the game’s history.

I followed the music and was brought to a full on rhythm game out of nowhere and if it’s moments like these you’re after, Where Winds Meet can scratch that itch.

Wish you were here

Following my time with the game, Where Winds Meet gets and 8/10. It was a genuine experience and not just another cookie cutter gacha game that puts you on the spot to spend just to progress. I was expecting copper, but in reality I found gold as the game offered so much without costing anything. From my time with it, the only real resource you’d have to put in is time and if you did want to spend, all purchases just lead to cosmetic options.

While my time with the game was short, it did show some of its flaws primarily in its pacing especially if you come from another long story based game and aren’t interested in exploration. The combat is a genuine highlight though and if you enjoy Sekiro or Black Myth: Wukong or enjoy Martial Arts films, you’re sure to enjoy Where Winds Meet and even if you aren’t into those genres it’s still worth a try. I see this game being a lot of people’s favorite game and if it’s yours, then I’m glad I (re)introduced this series to you.
