Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Team Surprised by Huge Success

The team behind the turn based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has openly admitted that the game‘s massive success caught them completely off guard. Creative director Guillaume Broche told Radio Times Gaming that before the launch, they knew the game would be “cool,” but they never expected it to get this “big.”

A Shocking Cultural Phenomenon

Broche confessed that the overwhelmingly positive reception from both fans and critics has made the team feel like “nobody really understands what’s happening.” He described receiving so much love from players as a “weird feeling” that is “touching and incredible” but very hard to explain.

Ben Starr, who voices the character Verso in the RPG, echoed this sentiment. He stated that the game was “never intended to be as big as it is” and that the whole experience has turned into a “cultural moment.” Starr attributes the game‘s unexpected popularity to its honesty and the fact that so many people have bought into that quality.

Record Breaking Performance

The game‘s commercial performance has been stellar: it sold 5 million copies in five months and received a record breaking 12 nominations at this year’s The Game Awards, including the coveted Game of the Year. The studio is continuing to support the title, having recently released Update 1.4.0, which added a Battle Retry option and various quality of life improvements.
