Divinity: Original Sin 2 Gets Current-Gen Console Upgrade

Larian Studios has officially released a current-gen version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. This release follows years of anticipation and comes just after the studio teased their next major project in the Divinity universe at The Game Awards 2025. Players who already own the game on previous-generation consoles (PS4, Xbox One, or the original Switch) can upgrade to the new version at no additional cost, with the minor exception of Japan, where a small fee is required.

Technical Enhancements and Seamless Transitions

While not a full remake or remaster, this new version is designed to let players experience the classic RPG on modern hardware with improved performance. Specifically, the Nintendo Switch 2 version is confirmed to feature higher resolutions and a smoother framerate compared to its predecessor. The upgrade ensures that the “Definitive Edition” remains accessible to a new generation of players, offering the same deep classless character building and tactical combat that made the game a standout title in the genre.

Ties to the Future of the Divinity Series

The upgrade serves as an ideal entry point for players looking to catch up on the series’ lore before the next Divinity game arrives. Larian has clarified that while the upcoming title will feature a completely new story and can be enjoyed as a standalone experience, it will share some continuity and characters with previous entries. Returning to Rivellon through Original Sin 2 may help long-time fans notice subtle threads and details that connect to the studio’s next ambitious fantasy project.
