Larian Confirms New Divinity Will Be A Turn-Based RPG

Following the major reveal at The Game Awards 2025, Larian Studios head Swen Vincke has confirmed that the upcoming Divinity title will remain true to the studio’s roots as a turn-based RPG. Speaking in recent interviews, Vincke clarified that the game will feature both single-player and co-op multiplayer elements, similar to the structure of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, he emphasized that this project represents the studio “unleashed,” aiming to take the features fans loved in previous titles to the next level.

Moving Beyond Dungeons & Dragons

A significant shift for this new entry is the departure from the Dungeons & Dragons mechanics used in Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, Larian is developing a bespoke system specifically tailored for a video game environment, which Vincke suggests will be easier for players to understand and more flexible for the developers. The studio is also utilizing a new game engine for Divinity, allowing them to implement innovative RPG features that Vincke claims “you haven’t seen in RPGs before.”

Early Access and Massive Scale

While Divinity does not yet have an official release date, Larian plans to follow its successful development model by launching the game in Early Access first. However, Vincke noted that this is unlikely to happen by 2026. The new title is reportedly even larger in scope than Baldur’s Gate 3, and because Larian owns the Divinity IP, the team has complete creative freedom to shape the universe. For those looking to catch up on the series, the current-gen upgrade for Divinity: Original Sin 2 is now available.
