Ryan Hurst Cast as Kratos in God of War Series

In a major casting reveal, Prime Video and Sony Pictures Television have announced that Ryan Hurst will take on the lead role of Kratos in the upcoming live-action God of War series. Hurst is already a familiar name to fans of the franchise, having delivered a BAFTA-nominated performance as the voice of Thor in the 2022 hit game God of War: Ragnarök. This unique transition from playing one of Kratos’ greatest antagonists to portraying the Ghost of Sparta himself has sparked significant excitement within the gaming community.

Adapting the Norse Saga

The live-action adaptation will skip the character’s early Greek origins to focus on the narrative established in the 2018 God of War reboot. The story follows Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they journey across the dangerous realms of Norse mythology to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ deceased wife, Faye: spreading her ashes from the highest peak in the land. The series aims to explore the deep emotional bond between the two, as Kratos struggles with his violent past while attempting to guide his son toward a better future.

Production Details and Two-Season Order

Amazon MGM Studios has shown immense confidence in the project by granting it a rare two-season order ahead of production. Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, serves as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. The series is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to begin filming in Vancouver in March 2026. With veteran director Frederick E.O. Toye set to helm the first two episodes, the production is gearing up to deliver a high-budget, cinematic experience faithful to the source material.
