Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Mobile Game

Square Enix has officially canceled the development of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a mobile RPG initially slated for release on iOS and Android platforms. Announced in 2022 alongside Kingdom Hearts IV, Missing-Link aimed to integrate GPS-based gameplay with the series’ signature action combat. Despite closed beta tests and ongoing adjustments, the development team concluded that they could not provide a long-term gaming experience that meets player expectations.

In a statement, Square Enix expressed heartfelt apologies to fans who anticipated the game’s launch, acknowledging the difficulty in sustaining a satisfactory live-service experience over time.

Strategic Shift: Quality Over Quantity

The decision to cancel Missing-Link is part of Square Enix’s broader initiative to prioritize quality over quantity in its game development strategy. CEO Takashi Kiryu highlighted the need to streamline the company’s lineup to ensure higher quality in each title, noting that the previous approach of developing a wide variety of titles led to resource splintering and inconsistent success.

This strategic pivot includes a focus on leveraging strong IPs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, while also embracing diverse game offerings to appeal to a broader audience. The company aims to balance blockbuster titles with unique, niche games that can steadily build earnings over time.

Ongoing Projects and Future Outlook

Despite the cancellation of Missing-Link, Square Enix remains committed to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, with Kingdom Hearts IV currently in development. Additionally, the company continues to work on major titles such as the final installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and Dragon Quest XII.
