Fans of “Sword Art Online Variant Showdown” received surprising news as its developers announced a year-long server shutdown to rectify persistent issues. The pause, commencing on September 28, 2023, at 5 PM (UTC) and ending in Summer 2024, aims to confront technical problems and bolster players’ experience.
In a Twitter post, the developers clarified that this maintenance isn’t solely about bug fixes. Instead, a complete system overhaul is in progress, underscoring their commitment to a smoother, more enjoyable experience.
Moreover, the developers are formulating fresh content to inject new vitality into the game, showcasing their forward-looking approach. Player feedback prompted adjustments to elements like character balance and game rules, reflecting their dedication to enhancing gameplay. Existing players needn’t fret over lost progress. Bandai Namco Entertainment guarantees data preservation throughout the hiatus, ensuring a seamless return once the game reopens.

Before maintenance, microtransaction sales will pause starting August 31, 2023, at 5 PM (UTC). Existing Boost Pass owners can continue using them, albeit with possible expiration during downtime. The developers expressed apologies for ongoing issues. Producer Takeuchi-san acknowledged, “Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by the various issues that have persisted since the app’s launch. Although we have tried to handle all issues as they arise, due to the frequency with which new issues are occurring, after careful consideration we have decided to temporarily suspend the service and carry out extensive maintenance to fix the underlying problems.”
To maintain transparency, the developers plan regular updates via Twitter, fostering a sense of involvement and change awareness.
