At Tokyo Game Show 2025, Duet Night Abyss producer Deca Bear spoke with AUTOMATON about a bold move: the upcoming free-to-play anime-inspired action RPG will remove all gacha systems, opting instead for a monetization model built around cosmetics.
Why the Switch Away from Gacha
Following feedback from closed beta tests, many players expressed dissatisfaction with typical gacha features—character banners, randomized pulls, and stamina limits. Deca Bear said that even optimized versions of those systems did not resolve the frustration. So, developer Pan Studio decided to remove both character and weapon gacha and to abolish the stamina (Sanergy) system. All characters and weapons will now be freely obtainable through gameplay.

What the New Monetization Model Looks Like
Instead of requiring players to pay for banners or RNG, the team plans to offer paid cosmetic content such as skins, outfits, and other visual customization. These won’t affect power or gameplay but will be aesthetic enhancements. Deca Bear emphasized the goal is accessibility, letting players progress at their own pace without feeling pressured to spend.

Long-Term Benefits and Risks
Dropping gacha may cut into some short-term revenue opportunities, but Pan Studio believes the long-term gains—better player retention, stronger reputation, healthier community—will make up for it. Deca Bear also pointed out that monetization models should serve the game experience, not compromise it.
