Kuro Games Assures Fans They Will Remain Independent Despite Tencent’s Recent Majority Stake Acquisition

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has acquired a 51.4% majority stake in Kuro Games, surpassing the 37% previously held by Hero Entertainment. Despite this acquisition, Kuro Games has assured fans and stakeholders that it will retain operational independence, aligning with Tencent’s approach to other subsidiaries such as Riot Games (League of Legends) and Supercell (Clash of Clans).

Kuro Games’ Independence Commitment

In an internal memo shared by Youxi Putao, Kuro Games emphasized that the partnership with Tencent will provide a stable environment for long-term plans while safeguarding the studio’s creative freedom. This autonomy is crucial as the developer continues to refine and expand its flagship title, Wuthering Waves, a fast-paced action RPG that has achieved over 30 million downloads since its May 2024 release.

Wuthering Waves: A Global Success

Wuthering Waves has impressed players with dynamic open-world exploration and intricate combat mechanics like dodging, parrying, and countering. Kuro Games recently celebrated the game’s success with in-game rewards for its community. The developer is also gearing up for a PS5 release in January 2025, signaling its ambitions for global growth.

Tencent’s Role in Supporting Kuro Games

While Tencent’s influence could bolster the studio’s resources and international reach, Kuro Games remains steadfast in its commitment to creativity and independence. This collaborative yet autonomous structure mirrors Tencent’s prior successes with its gaming subsidiaries, allowing Kuro Games to maintain its identity and vision while benefiting from expanded opportunities.
