Markus ‘Notch’ Persson Announces Spiritual Successor to Minecraft

Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has revealed plans to develop a spiritual successor to the iconic game. In a recent social media poll, he asked followers whether he should continue working on a traditional roguelike dungeon crawler or pivot to creating a game similar to Minecraft. The majority favored the latter, with 77% supporting the idea of a Minecraft successor.

Following the poll, Persson stated, “I basically announced Minecraft 2.” He expressed enthusiasm for returning to game development and acknowledged the challenges of creating a sequel that lives up to the original. Persson emphasized that his new project would not infringe on Mojang’s work, noting, “I also intend to do this in a way that in no way [tries] to sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing.”

It’s important to note that Persson sold Mojang and the rights to Minecraft to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. Since then, he has not released a new game, despite founding another studio. Additionally, his name was removed from Minecraft in 2019 due to controversial statements he made online.

While the prospect of a Minecraft successor is exciting, it’s uncertain whether this project will come to fruition. Persson’s track record over the past decade suggests that fans should temper their expectations until more concrete developments are announced.
