After years of legal battles, Moonton Games and Riot Games have finally settled their global intellectual property disputes. On April 2, 2024, both companies officially ended their feud by signing the agreement, prompting Riot Games to withdraw its lawsuits.
The conflict began in 2017 when Riot Games sued Moonton for copyright infringement, seeking $2.9 million in damages. In May 2022, Riot Games filed a second lawsuit against Moonton, alleging that its game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang copied elements from Riot’s popular title, League of Legends.

Riot Games accused Mobile Legends: Bang Bang of replicating campaign content, character designs, trailers, and community reactions. Riot even asked Google to remove the game from the Play Store, but Moonton released a modified version after its removal.

In November 2022, the District Court dismissed the case, suggesting the parties settle in China, where Moonton and Riot Games’ parent company, Tencent, are based. The resolution between Moonton and Riot signifies the end of a highly publicized controversy in the gaming industry. This dispute joins other notable legal battles, such as the Apple vs. Epic Games case.
While specific details of monetary agreements remain undisclosed, both parties will find relief now that the dispute has been resolved. This settlement underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property in gaming.
