Netflix’s BioShock Movie Will Adapt the First Game, Producer Confirms

The long-awaited BioShock movie is finally surfacing with new details. Producer Roy Lee has confirmed that the Netflix adaptation will stay true to its roots, directly adapting the first BioShock game instead of creating a new storyline.

A Return to Rapture

Directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games), with a script by Michael Green (Logan), the film will explore Rapture — the haunting underwater city of ambition, decay, and survival. Fans of the original 2007 release can expect a faithful retelling of Jack’s descent into this dystopian world.

Development Timeline

In a recent interview with The Direct, Lee revealed that BioShock will be Lawrence’s next project following The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, currently filming for a November 2026 release. The BioShock script is still being refined, but production is expected to ramp up once Lawrence wraps his other commitments.

Can Rapture Work on the Big Screen?

One of the biggest challenges lies in translating Rapture’s atmosphere to live action. The neon-lit halls, dripping corridors, and menacing Big Daddies need to feel authentic without losing the game’s oppressive tone. However, the success of other adaptations like The Last of Us has given fans hope that Netflix can deliver a faithful and chilling version of the city under the sea.

A Landmark Game, A New Adaptation

Since its release in 2007, BioShock has been hailed as one of the most influential narrative-driven games of all time. Its story of survival, moral choices, and a crumbling utopia still resonates nearly two decades later. With Lawrence’s direction and Green’s writing pedigree, many believe this adaptation could finally break the video game movie curse.

Netflix will distribute the BioShock film worldwide. Casting details and a release date remain unannounced, but anticipation is building fast. If the team can capture the oppressive beauty of Rapture, this may be one of the most exciting game-to-film adaptations yet.
