Nintendo of America has filed a lawsuit against Reddit user James C. Williams, also known online as Archbox, seeking $4.5 million in damages. The gaming giant accuses Williams of operating and promoting multiple Switch piracy networks through Reddit and other platforms.
Court documents reveal that Williams allegedly distributed copyrighted Nintendo Switch games via so-called “Pirate Shops.” The lawsuit further states he used Reddit posts to encourage users to download pirated copies of popular Nintendo titles and even requested eShop gift cards to support his illegal activities.

Nintendo Back At It Again With The Lawsuits
According to reports, Williams ignored a cease-and-desist order issued by Nintendo in early 2024. His continued involvement led Nintendo to pursue a default judgment, as he failed to respond in court. The lawsuit highlights 30 major first-party Nintendo games that were allegedly distributed illegally — including flagship titles meant to strengthen the company’s legal position.
Nintendo’s claim argues that these acts directly violated U.S. copyright laws and caused significant financial and reputational harm. While the $4.5 million amount represents only part of the potential damages, it sends a strong warning to others engaging in similar activity.
What Comes Next
If the court grants Nintendo’s request, Williams will be legally required to pay $4.5 million and cease all infringing activity. As of now, he has not mounted a defense, leaving Nintendo’s motion largely uncontested.
