In response to its ongoing legal battle with Nintendo, Pocketpair has modified a core gameplay feature in Palworld. With the release of patch v0.5.5, players can no longer glide using their Pals. Instead, gliding now requires an in-game glider item. While Pals can still provide passive buffs to gliding, the direct use of Pals for aerial movement has been removed.
This change follows a previous update in November 2024, which eliminated the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres—a mechanic reminiscent of Pokémon’s Poké Balls.
Legal Pressures Prompt Gameplay Changes
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair in September 2024, alleging that Palworld infringes on multiple patents related to creature capturing and riding mechanics. These patents, some of which were filed after Palworld’s release but linked to earlier filings, have been a point of contention.
In a statement, Pocketpair expressed disappointment over the necessary changes but emphasized their importance in preventing further disruptions to the game’s development.

Implications for Indie Developers
The lawsuit has raised concerns within the gaming community about the potential for large companies to use patents to stifle competition. Some industry observers argue that patenting common gameplay mechanics could hinder innovation, particularly among indie developers.
As the legal proceedings continue, Pocketpair remains committed to developing Palworld and delivering new content to its players.
