Riot Games, the developer behind the hugely popular MOBA game “League of Legends,” is expanding into the world of fighting games with their upcoming release of “Project L”. The game features characters from League of Legends in a 2D fighting game format and is already generating buzz in the gaming community. The latest update seems to hint that Riot is already in talks with Sony to bring “Project L” to the annual fighting game tournament, EVO.
In an interview with media outlet Digiday, John Needham, Riot Games’ esports lead, discussed the company’s approach to esports and their plans for “Project L” including how they were in talks with PlayStation about how their fighting game can be part of EVO. Some titles include in EVO include “Tekken,” “Mortal Kombat,” “King Of Fighters,” “Dragon Ball Fighter Z,” and many more.
Needham stated that they are excited about the game’s potential as an esport and that they will look to the community’s needs in designing their esports strategy. He also acknowledged that the fighting game community has different expectations from the esports scene, and “Project L” as an esport will be very different from other Riot Games titles like Valorant and League of Legends.

With the game’s release date still unknown, Riot Games’ commitment to developing an esports scene for “Project L” shows their dedication to expanding their reach in the gaming industry. The support of the fighting game community and Riot Games’ reputation for delivering quality esports experiences bode well for “Project L’s” potential for success.
