Roblox Now Requires Mandatory Age Verification and Facial Recognition for Chat Access

In a move towards enhancing platform safety, Roblox has announced that it will soon require players to undergo facial recognition-based age verification to unlock communication features.

Coming In December For Selected Countries

The enforcement of this new security measure is set to begin in the first week of December for users in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Following this initial rollout, the requirement will expand globally to the rest of the world in early 2026. This initiative is part of Roblox’s broader strategy to create a safer environment for children by moving beyond simple self-declared age systems.

How Do You Go About This New Policy

To access chat and other age-appropriate experiences, users must complete an age check using either Facial Age Estimation or traditional government ID verification. The facial estimation process utilizes AI technology to analyze a user’s facial features to estimate their age without retaining the biometric data.

Once verified, users will generally only be allowed to chat with others in similar age groups, limiting direct communication between minors and adults unless they are designated as “Trusted Connections.” Roblox claims this shift from self-reporting to biometric and ID-based verification represents a new industry safety standard.
