Tencent and Grey State Studio (formerly Aurora Studio) have revealed Rules of Engagement: The Grey State, a tactical extraction shooter with a horror theme that will be available for free on PC in 2026.

Scenery and gameplay

Players enter the Grey State, a terrifying alternate dimension where rival squads and terrifying monsters can be found everywhere. As a Strider, it is your job to enter these dangerous areas, gather priceless artifacts, and escape unscathed.

PvE and PvP combat are combined in the gameplay, forcing players to confront the environment’s and one another’s horrors. A flexible class system that accommodates various playstyles, strategy-focused encounters, and fierce firefights are all to be expected. Three different classes will be available at launch, with more to follow.

Philosophy and Monetization

With no pay-to-win components, Grey State Studio wants the game to remain free to play. Character skins, weapon designs, and optional battle passes will be the only cosmetic upgrades available for purchase.

Schedule and Examination

Before the full release later in the year, players will have the opportunity to experience the game’s eerie atmosphere and tactical depth during an alpha playtest that is planned for early 2026. Wishlist the game now on Steam.
