Sony to Release New Resident Evil Reboot Film on September 18, 2026

Sony has officially announced that a new Resident Evil live-action reboot film will hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons), this latest adaptation aims to return the franchise to its horror roots.

A Return to Horror Roots

According to Deadline, four major studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, competed for the film rights. Ultimately, Sony secured the project, continuing its long-standing association with the Resident Evil film series. Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are set to produce the reboot, with Cregger co-writing the screenplay alongside Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Army of the Dead). Key producers include:

  • Robert Kulzer (Constantin Film)
  • Roy Lee (Vertigo Entertainment)
  • Miri Yoon (Vertigo Entertainment)
  • PlayStation Productions

Nicole Brown is overseeing the project. Sources from The Hollywood Reporter claim the new film will stay true to the original Resident Evil games, emphasizing the franchise’s horror elements.

Resident Evil’s Film History

This new reboot marks the franchise’s eighth live-action film. The original Resident Evil movie series, starring Milla Jovovich, spanned six films between 2002 and 2017. The previous reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, premiered in 2021 in the United States and 2022 in Japan, featuring a unique narrative set in the late 1990s.

Meanwhile, the CG-animated film Resident Evil: Death Island debuted in July 2023, further expanding the franchise’s cinematic reach.

Resident Evil’s Legacy

The original Resident Evil game, launched in 1996, was recently inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame in 2024. The latest major entry in the game series, Resident Evil Village, was released in May 2021 across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.
