Ubisoft Eyes Battle Royale Comeback with Project Scout

Ubisoft is reportedly developing a new battle royale game, codenamed “Project Scout,” drawing inspiration from Apex Legends. This move follows the company’s previous attempt with Hyper Scape, which launched in August 2020 but was shut down less than two years later due to a lack of sustained player interest.

Learning from Hyper Scape’s Shortcomings

Hyper Scape aimed to differentiate itself with vertical gameplay and a futuristic setting. Despite initial interest, it struggled to maintain a player base and was officially discontinued on April 28, 2022. Ubisoft acknowledged the game’s shortcomings and expressed intentions to apply lessons learned to future projects.

‘Project Scout’: A Familiar Yet Fresh Approach

According to a report by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, “Project Scout” has been in development for at least two years. The game is expected to feature characters reminiscent of Apex Legends’ roster, including variations of Pathfinder, Wraith, and Lifeline. Ubisoft aims to capitalize on perceived gaps in the market, particularly as Apex Legends’ player count fluctuates.

Navigating a Competitive Landscape

The battle royale genre remains highly competitive, with established titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone dominating the scene. Ubisoft’s challenge lies in offering a unique experience that balances innovation with familiarity. Success will depend on compelling gameplay, fair monetization strategies, and the ability to build and sustain a dedicated player community.
