Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Developer Cygames Settles 2023 Lawsuit with Konami

The Japanese studio Cygames has announced that it has settled a patent lawsuit filed by Konami Digital Entertainment related to the popular mobile game Uma Musume: Pretty Derby. The initial claim, which was submitted in March 2023, claimed that some of Uma Musume’s systems violated Konami’s patents.

What Was at Issue in the Case

At first, Konami asked for an injunction that could have stopped the game’s distribution and damages of about 4 billion yen, or about USD 29 million. The main point of contention was a training-system mechanism in which story events are influenced by support characters; Konami claimed that this system was protected by Japanese Patent No. 5814300.

Settlement Specifics and Consequences

The parent company of Cygames declared on November 7, 2025, that an agreement with Konami had settled the conflict. Cygames reiterated its belief that there was no patent infringement and stated that the terms are confidential. The settlement allows Uma Musume: Pretty Derby to continue without public legal uncertainty by eliminating the risk of service interruption.
