The much-anticipated MMO based on the Warhammer universe, developed by Jackalyptic Games under the backing of NetEase, has been cancelled following the studio’s shutdown. The announcement came from studio founder Jack Emmert who confirmed the end of the partnership after nearly three and a half years.

Background of the Project and the Reasons for Cancellation
In partnership with Games Workshop, Jackalyptic Games (formerly known as Jackalope Games) was established to create a premium PC/console MMO based on the Warhammer IP. Even though it was first revealed in 2023, development never advanced to a stage where it could be played by the general public. Funding limitations and NetEase’s withdrawal from western MMO projects ultimately caused the project to fail.

The Significance of This
The cancellation contributes to a concerning pattern in which large MMO projects, even those supported by one of the biggest publishers in the gaming industry, are beset by market risk and funding reductions. Warhammer fans had great expectations, and this development represents yet another missed chance for new MMOs set in that universe.
