Riot Games, the developer of popular titles like League of Legends and Valorant, confirms the layoff of 530 employees, about 11% of its global workforce. Additionally, the company discontinues its third-party publishing label.
The official statement underscores that this workforce reduction is not driven by shareholder appeasement or short-term financial goals but is necessary for the company’s sustained viability. CEO Dylan Jadeja explained the decision in a letter to the staff, highlighting the reasons for the restructuring.

Jadeja reveals that since 2019, Riot Games has undertaken substantial projects, expanding its efforts across various initiatives and doubling the size of the studio. However, the company acknowledges a lack of a sharp focus, admitting they have become too scattered, with myriad projects underway. To streamline operations, Riot Games will reduce the size of the Legends of Runeterra teams, aiming to make the game more sustainable.

Despite the layoffs, Riot Games remains committed to its core live games, including League of Legends, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift, asserting intensified efforts and ambitions within these flagship titles.

Layoffs will be implemented over the coming weeks, contingent on local laws and regulations. Riot Games plans to offer a minimum of six months’ salary, cash bonuses, and an array of benefits and support to affected employees, demonstrating a commitment to easing the transition.
