Ryujinx, A Popular Nintendo Switch Emulator, Shuts Down Amid Nintendo Crackdown

Ryujinx, a widely-used open-source Nintendo Switch emulator, has ceased operations following legal intervention from Nintendo. On Tuesday, Ryujinx developers announced on their official X account that Nintendo contacted the emulator’s creator, gdkchan, offering an agreement to halt the project and remove related assets.

“Yesterday, gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets,” developer riperiperi confirmed in a statement. Ryujinx, launched in 2017, supported over 3,200 playable games across platforms like Windows, Linux, and macOS.

The shutdown follows Nintendo’s increasing legal actions against emulators, including a recent lawsuit against Tropic Haze, creators of the Yuzu emulator. Tropic Haze settled for $2.4 million after claims that “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” had been pirated over 1 million times.

Nintendo’s crackdown on Switch emulators underscores its aggressive approach to protecting its intellectual property.
