Command & Conquer and OD Actor Udo Kier Dies at 81

German character actor Udo Kier, known for his eccentric screen presence across art house cinema, Hollywood blockbusters, and video games, passed away on Sunday morning, November 23, 2025, at the age of 81. His partner, Delbert McBride, confirmed the news. Kier had an incredibly prolific career, starring in over 200 movies and working with iconic directors like Lars von Trier, Werner Herzog, and Andy Warhol.

Legacy in the Command & Conquer Franchise

Kier was a familiar face and voice within the gaming sphere, most famously for his role as the psychic villain Yuri in the live-action cutscenes of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and its expansion, Yuri’s Revenge. His distinctive, haunting portrayal of the character became an enduring highlight of the real-time strategy franchise. His other game credits include playing Dr. Peter Straub in Call of Duty: WWII and voicing Erich in 2022’s Martha is Dead.

Hideo Kojima Pays Tribute to OD Star

One of Kier’s final anticipated roles is in OD, the upcoming horror game from Kojima Productions, directed by Hideo Kojima. Kier was announced as a cast member upon the project’s reveal in 2023. Following the news of his passing, Hideo Kojima took to social media to eulogize the actor, expressing his shock and sadness. Kojima noted that they were forced to reschedule the OD shoot to the following year due to the actors’ strike, but they had maintained close contact. Kojima referred to Kier not just as an actor, but as a “great icon” of his time. It is expected that OD will feature one of Kier’s final on-screen performances.
