Ólafur Darri Ólafsson Joins Amazon’s God of War Series as Thor

Amazon’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the God of War franchise has officially cast Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the God of Thunder, Thor. Known for his standout performance in Apple TV’s Severance, Ólafsson brings a physical presence and depth that aligns with the more nuanced, weary version of Thor seen in the Norse-era games. The news follows a period of heavy casting speculation and confirms earlier reports that had correctly identified several other key members of the production. With filming reportedly scheduled to begin in March 2026, the series is quickly taking shape under the leadership of showrunner Ronald D. Moore, who stepped in after the original creative team departed over creative differences.

Familiar Faces and Legendary Additions

The casting of Thor is just one piece of an increasingly star-studded ensemble designed to bring the world of Midgard to life. While some fans were surprised by the choice for Kratos, the overall cast list suggests a focus on seasoned character actors. The current confirmed and reported cast includes:

Ryan Hurst, known for his work in Sons of Anarchy and for providing the voice and motion capture for Thor in the original games, will step into the lead role of Kratos. Broadway and television legend Mandy Patinkin has been tapped to play Odin, the All-Father and primary antagonist of the Norse arc. Teresa Palmer will portray the goddess Sif, while Max Parker has been cast as the keen-eyed Heimdall. Adding further excitement for fans of the source material, reports suggest that Alastair Duncan may reprise his fan-favorite role as Mimir, providing the voice and likeness for the “smartest man alive.”

High Stakes for the Adaptation

The God of War series carries significant expectations following the massive critical and commercial success of Amazon’s Fallout adaptation. By moving the project under the guidance of Ronald D. Moore, famed for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, PlayStation Productions and Amazon are aiming for a prestige television feel rather than a straightforward action romp. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the casting indicates the show will focus heavily on the Norse mythology introduced in the 2018 game. As production gears up for its March start date, fans are still waiting for news regarding key roles such as Atreus, Baldur, and the witch of the woods, Freya.
