Vi 3v3 Arena Devs Break Down Its History, New Updates, and Legacy

In a world saturated with big-name publishers and blockbuster franchises, Vi 3v3 Arena emerges as a bold, refreshing force. Crafted not in billion-dollar studios, but in the heart of the Philippines by the indie team at GridLock-Games. At the center of this movement is a vision: to empower local talent, redefine the esports ecosystem, and tell stories rooted in both myth and modernity.

More Than Just a Game

At first glance, Vi 3v3 Arena appears to be your typical fast-paced, action-packed arena brawler. But behind its dynamic gameplay lies a deeply thoughtful foundation. Drawing inspiration from mythology, Vi reimagines tales like Malakas and Maganda while seamlessly weaving in iconic legends such as Guinevere and Lu Bu.

“Vi” itself comes from the Latin word for “Force,” echoing the game’s central theme: a neutral energy that connects all things, neither light nor dark. This mystique extends into gameplay mechanics and narrative, creating a universe that is both expansive and evolving.

The Indie Grind: Building One Step at a Time

What makes Vi 3v3 Arena special isn’t just its features but also it’s journey. GridLock-Games began as a small idea incubated through the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) iForward Program, aimed at helping OFWs turn their global experience into local opportunities. It was here that the game’s creator, a former software engineer, transformed a dream into a startup.

From local school demos to tech expos, the team hit the road to slowly build their community. Every playtest, every conversation, and every Discord comment shaped the game. Community feedback wasn’t just welcomed, it became a cornerstone. “Some members are delighted when they see their suggestions implemented,” said Rob Saluna, VP & CBD. “It creates a sense of ownership.”

Vi Essence and the Grind-to-Trade Philosophy

Perhaps one of the most compelling features of Vi is its in-game currency system—Vi Essence. True to the game’s ethos of inclusivity and innovation, Vi Essence can be earned through gameplay and exchanged for real-world items. From soft drinks to gadgets, even a “Gridlock Mall” is on the horizon. This ecosystem challenges the traditional “pay-to-win” model, offering something radically different: grind-to-trade.

GridLock has already host events in TNC, Nostrax, and other internet cafes to test the viability of this system. It’s not just a game mechanic, it’s a way to make gaming more meaningful and accessible.

Expanding the Universe

With upcoming features like Essence Tag—a mechanic reminiscent of Marvel vs. Capcom’s tag-team system—and Cards of Fate, GridLock-Games is constantly innovating. They’re also introducing a new hybrid mode called Essence War, which blends MOBA strategy with FPS-style domination objectives, a genre fusion not often seen in indie titles.

Behind the scenes, GridLock is hard at work expanding the world of Vi, named Pangea, with more characters, factions, and interconnected stories planned.

Partnership-Fueled Growth

A crucial part of GridLock-Games’ success has been their focus on strategic partnerships. Collaborations with DOST and initiatives like the PowerUp and LevelUp programs have allowed the team to scale beyond imagination. These government-backed efforts are helping reshape how indie games are funded, nurtured, and promoted in the Philippines.

Furthermore, GridLock’s ongoing efforts have helped forge new alliances with tech brands, events, and educational institutions, opening doors not only for Vi 3v3 Arena but for the entire indie game dev community

Looking Ahead

Vi 3v3 Arena is still in development, but the dream is bigger than just a single title. GridLock aims to create opportunities for more Filipino developers, build stronger ecosystems, and prove that world-class games can come from Southeast Asia.

As the studio continues to grow, one message remains clear: enjoy the process, embrace the grind, and uplift each other.
