Fans of Resident Evil have a reason to rejoice as Capcom has officially announced that development has begun on the next Resident Evil game. During the Capcom Next: Summer 2024 event, Kōshi Nakanishi, the director behind Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, confirmed he is at the helm of this new project.

Nakanishi, who also directed Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, and contributed to Resident Evil 5, hinted at the magnitude of the upcoming game. “We’re going to make a new Resident Evil,” Nakanishi stated at the end of the event’s presentation. “It’s hard to know what to do after Resident Evil 7. But I figured it out, and honestly, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details yet, but I hope you’re looking forward to it.”

Though details remain scarce, speculation is already swirling about Resident Evil 9. Industry insider Dusk Golem has suggested that the game may utilize the RE Engine’s open-world capabilities, initially showcased in Dragon’s Dogma 2. He has also hinted that the game could be announced in fall 2024, with a potential release in 2025, and aims to be the most significant entry in the franchise’s history.
With Capcom’s track record and Nakanishi’s proven expertise, the anticipation for the next Resident Evil game is palpable. Fans can look forward to what promises to be another thrilling chapter in this iconic series.
