PC players of the hit live service game Helldivers 2 can celebrate a massive reduction in the game‘s install size. With assistance from Sony’s PC port specialist, Nixxes, developer Arrowhead has managed to shrink the game‘s storage footprint by approximately 85%.

The Massive Storage Saving
The install size of Helldivers 2 on PC was previously around 154GB. Thanks to Nixxes’ optimizations, the size has been reduced to just 23GB, saving players a substantial 131GB of drive space.

Technical Beta and Performance
The reduction is currently being rolled out as a public technical beta. Arrowhead conducted internal testing to ensure the change did not significantly impact performance, particularly for the 11% of players still using mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). The testing showed that, in the worst cases, mission loading times for HDD users only increased by a few seconds. This minor impact was deemed acceptable, as the majority of the loading time is due to level generation rather than asset loading.
Players interested in testing the reduced install size can opt in immediately via Steam by navigating to the game‘s Properties, selecting Beta Participation, and choosing the prod_slim option from the dropdown list. If the public testing goes well, the developers plan to discontinue the legacy version of the game sometime next year.

Helldivers 2’s Success
Helldivers 2, which launched in February 2024, has been Sony’s most significant live service success, selling over five million units across PC and PlayStation 5 within a month. The game also launched on Xbox Series S and X consoles in August 2025 and performed strongly there as well.
