Riot Games has revealed that the source code for their fantasy MOBA, “League Of Legends” and its auto battler offshoot, “Teamfight Tactics” has been stolen and held for ransom. The developer claimed in a series of tweets that the code was stolen in an attack on their servers last week. The hackers have made demands, that Riot says they won’t meet. Law enforcement authorities and Riot are both looking into the attack, but Riot is adamant that the hackers did not get access to the personal information of League of Legends players.

Riot says that during the weekend, their analysis showed that the attackers exfiltrated source codes for League, TFT, and a legacy anti-cheat platform and that they got a ransom asking for 10 million US Dollars. The corporation stated that due to the interruption the hack produced, problems with “League Of Legends” may arise in the future. Needless to say, they will not pay.
Riot stated that they will focus their efforts on limiting the likelihood of any new cheats emerging as a result of the source code theft. Some test features in the stolen code could have been exposed by the thieves. Riot emphasized that “there’s no assurance it will ever be released” and that “the majority of this material is a prototype.”

Authorities are also looking into the hack, which Riot attributed to a group rather than a single perpetrator. The company announced that it would soon publish a report detailing the attackers’ strategies, the areas where Riot’s security procedures failed, and the efforts they are taking to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
