Excitement turned to disappointment for fans awaiting the League of Legends MMO, as Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill delivered an update on its development. Merrill revealed that the game’s direction has been reset, pushing its release timeline back by several years.
The League of Legends MMO has long been hailed as one of Riot Games’ most ambitious projects, promising to immerse players in the rich lore of the Runeterra universe. However, after a period of silence, Merrill’s update dashed hopes of imminent progress.

In a thread on X, Merrill confessed that the development team had opted to overhaul the game’s direction due to concerns about its lack of uniqueness. The goal, he emphasized, was to deliver an experience that transcends the traditional MMO formula.
“We don’t believe players want an MMO they’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to do justice to Runeterra and meet player expectations, we need to do something that feels like a significant evolution of the genre,” Merrill explained.
This shift prompted a restructuring of the development team, with industry veteran Fabrice Condominas as executive producer and Vijay Thakkar as technical director.

Despite the disappointment of a prolonged silence and a reset in direction, Merrill assured fans that the project remains underway. However, he cautioned that the extensive overhaul would result in a protracted period of silence. The prospect of receiving further updates on the MMO was bleak, with Merrill hinting that it could be “several years” before the team resurfaces with details.

The news undoubtedly comes as a blow to fans eagerly anticipating updates, particularly as hopes of a release coinciding with League of Legends’ 15th-anniversary celebrations later this year have been dashed. However, amidst the disappointment, there are silver linings.
For one, the commitment to delivering a truly innovative and unique MMO experience underscores Riot’s dedication to quality over expediency. Furthermore, the continued development of the game, despite recent layoffs at Riot Games, offers reassurance that the project remains a priority for the studio.
