Square Enix has initiated a lawsuit against HK TEN TREE LIMITED, also known as TenTree Games, alleging copyright infringement concerning their recent game, Mecharashi.
The controversy centers on Mecharashi, a high-end strategy RPG launched in Japan in October 2024, with a global release planned for June 20, 2025, on mobile and PC platforms. Square Enix asserts that TenTree Games utilized materials and designs from the canceled Front Mission 2089: Borderscape, a project previously under Square Enix’s supervision before its termination in October 2022.

Legal Actions Taken
In December 2024, Square Enix issued a formal request to TenTree Games to remove the allegedly infringing content. Despite initial compliance, TenTree Games did not fully address the concerns, leading Square Enix to file a lawsuit on March 4, 2025, in the Tokyo District Court, followed by another in the United States on March 13, 2025. The company seeks damages, including up to $150,000 for each copyright violation, and injunctive relief to prevent further infringement.

Implications for the Gaming Industry
This lawsuit highlights the challenges developers face regarding intellectual property rights and the importance of clear contractual agreements. As the gaming industry continues to expand, such legal disputes may become more prevalent, emphasizing the need for developers to navigate IP laws diligently.
