StarCraft Rumored to Return as Third-Person Shooter

The legendary StarCraft franchise is rumored to be making a major comeback with a completely different genre. According to a report by industry insider Jez Corden, Blizzard Entertainment is preparing to unveil a third-person shooter set in the StarCraft universe during BlizzCon 2026. This project is said to be the highlight of the event, potentially overshadowing other expected announcements like World of Warcraft expansions and Overwatch updates. Corden claims to have confirmed this information through internal sources, suggesting that the long-dormant sci-fi series is finally ready to step back into the spotlight.

Moving Beyond Strategy

While StarCraft is famous for its roots in the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, a shift to a third-person shooter would be a significant departure. The series has been largely inactive since the final expansion for StarCraft II in 2016 and the subsequent remaster in 2017. For many fans, this news feels like a spiritual revival of StarCraft: Ghost, a stealth-action project that was famously cancelled years ago. Reviving the IP through a modern shooter lens is seen as a way to reintroduce the rich lore and iconic races, Terran, Zerg, and Protoss, to a broader audience under the Xbox and Microsoft umbrella.

Part of a Massive 2026 Lineup

The rumor surfaced as part of a larger report detailing Microsoft’s ambitious plans for 2026. In addition to the new StarCraft title, other rumored projects include remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, as well as the active development of Wolfenstein 3 by MachineGames. If true, BlizzCon 2026 could serve as a major turning point for Blizzard, signaling a return to its most beloved franchises with fresh perspectives. While nothing is official yet, the prospect of taking direct control of a Jim Raynor or Nova-style character in a modern action game has already sparked intense excitement among the community.
