Ice Code Games, the studio renowned for Hard West 2 and Rogue Waters, is set to release its latest title, Nightmare Frontier, in Early Access on Steam this summer. This game introduces a unique blend of tactical turn-based strategy, roguelite elements, and extraction looter mechanics, all set within a haunting alternate 19th-century America.
A World Where Nightmares Manifest
In Nightmare Frontier, players assume the role of a ringleader leading a band of scavengers through a city consumed by a metaphysical force known as the Nightmare. This dark power has unleashed Dreadweavers—monsters born from humanity’s deepest fears. As you delve deeper into the city, the Nightmare intensifies, presenting greater challenges and more formidable foes.
Innovative Tactical Combat Mechanics
Building upon the mechanics of Hard West 2, Nightmare Frontier offers a “Turn-Based Gun ‘n’ Slash” combat system. Players can execute trick shots, utilize the environment strategically, and chain abilities to outmaneuver enemies. The game also incorporates melee combat elements reminiscent of Rogue Waters, providing a dynamic and engaging battle experience.
Risk and Reward: The Core Gameplay Loop
A central feature of Nightmare Frontier is its “push your luck” mechanic. Players must decide whether to press deeper into the Nightmare for greater rewards or retreat to safety to preserve their gains. This risk-reward balance adds a layer of strategic depth, as greed can lead to devastating consequences.
Crafting and Progression
Defeated Dreadweavers yield materials that players can use to craft and enhance weapons, blending early 1900s technology with supernatural elements. Additionally, players can recruit new team members, each bringing unique abilities and challenges, further enriching the gameplay experience.
Upcoming Demo and PAX East Showcase
A playable demo of Nightmare Frontier will soon be available on Steam. From May 8th to 11th, Ice Code Games will showcase the game at PAX East in Boston at the Games From Poland booth (#15078).
