Many things could be said about the Fatal Frame franchise. It’s filled with horror, history, unique gameplay, and a legacy fans would always look at with joy. While the last few years had brought about remasters for Maiden of the Black Water and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, the second game in the franchise, Crimson Butterfly, was the first to receive a full-on remake, meaning it was rebuilt from the ground up.
Taipei Game Show attendees were fortunate enough to be able to relive the horror firsthand prior to the demo’s global launch on March 5, 2026, and the team was fortunate enough to have a go at the game, with the footage being found through our social media platforms.
The Demo Experience
Trying the demo, you’re in control of Mio, similar to how it was in the game’s original incarnation, and thankfully, unlike most demos in the area, it was even available in English. Playing the game through a headset added to the entire experience, and honestly, I felt like a teenager again, picking this game up for the first time. Movement felt smooth with Mio, and even her sister Mayu was easy to manipulate all throughout.
As a fan, what I enjoyed particularly was how the horror sequences were gritty while still having that sense of realism. This was more evident, especially during the ghost-capturing sequence,s where the faces felt realistic, adding to the horror. The shutter sounds and even getting to dodge and weave through the approaching ghosts reminded me of what makes the game fun, and while I may not have been the best player, I’m definitely excited for the title’s eventual full release.
Countdown to Shutter Sounds

With March soon approaching, I’m excited for the rest of the populace to be able to relive the horror. Koei Tecmo did a great job with the source material, and I’m sure the full release will turn out great.
FATAL FRAME II – Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will be releasing its demo on March 5, later this year, with March 11 being the game’s release date. Consoles included in the release are PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam
