Ranma 1/2 Anime Remake Announced With MAPPA animating

Earlier today, Netflix Japan announced that MAPPA, the studio behind “Attack on Titan,” is remaking the beloved 90s romcom anime “Ranma ½.” This new version will premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 5, 2024.

“Ranma ½,” created by “Inuyasha” author Rumiko Takahashi, is a fantasy action rom-com about Ranma Saotome, a young martial artist cursed to transform into a girl when splashed with cold water, only reverting with warm water. The story humorously explores his life, including his arranged marriage to Akane Tendō, a martial arts prodigy who isn’t fond of men, and his growing list of love interests.

The remake will feature the original Japanese voice cast, including Kappei Yamaguchi as male Ranma and Megumi Hayashibara as female Ranma. Directed by Kōnosuke Uda (early “One Piece”), scripted by Kimiko Ueno (“Delicious in Dungeon”), and with character designs by Hiromi Taniguchi (“FLCL: Alternative”), the series promises to blend nostalgia with fresh animation. The opening theme will be performed by pop singer Ano, with music by Kaoru Wada (“Inuyasha”).

“Ranma ½” is celebrated for its slapstick comedy and as a trans allegory. This remake follows a trend of reviving retro anime, as seen with David Production’s “Urusei Yatsura” and upcoming projects like “The Rose of Versailles” and “Magic Knight Rayearth.”
