Marrying Myth with Modernity
Set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, Cosmic Princess Kaguya tells of the dreams, hope, and bond between girls who are connected by music. Kaguya, a mysterious girl from the moon, works as a live streamer in Tsukuyomi with her high school manager, Iroha Sakayori. Iroha is a fan of Yachiyo Runami, the 8,000-year-old AI administrator and top live streamer who oversees everything in the realm.

It reimagines The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Japan’s oldest folktale, which tells the story of Princess Kaguya. An old bamboo cutter adopts Kaguya, who is originally from the moon, and must return home one day. She grows up beautiful and blessed, with many men pursuing her, though she rejects them all. Before she leaves, she writes farewell letters to her family and to the Emperor who seeks her. Her memories with them are later erased as she ascends to the moon.
